Gyros sandwiches are a classic Chicago favorite. These pita sandwiches are available at just about any Chicago style hot dog stand, and are great for any meal. Making them at home is very simple. All you need is an oven or charcoal grill, a makeshift spit, and all the ingredients mentioned below. Here is a very simple recipe for making your own gyros sandwiches.
Meat:
- 1 ½ lbs ground lamb
- 1/2lb high fat ground beef
- 4 cloves crushed garlic
- 1 1/2t fine sea salt
- 1t marjoram
- 1t rosemary
- 1/2t freshly ground black pepper
Mix all ingredients together and chill for 2 hours. Put the mix in a food processor and blend well. Form into an oblong shape around a spit and cook on the grill, as far from the coals as possible, and rotate frequently.
Tzatziki Sauce:
- 1 lb plain Greek style yogurt
- 1 cucumber peeled and finely chopped
- 4 cloves crushed garlic
- 1t freshly squeezed lemon juice
Mix ingredients together in a food processor and chill for 2 hours before serving.
Sandwich:
Serve on pita bread. Shave the meat onto the pita bread using a very sharp knife or cheese cutter. Add slices of raw onion and tomato. Add a generous amount of tzatziki sauce and serve.
