Yes, I am aware this is not Philadelphia. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get a damn good Philly cheesesteak sandwich. After all, this is Chicago. We do everything better in Chicago. And the place to go for one of the best Philly cheesesteak sandwiches in the nation is Philly’s Best in Greektown. They have three other locations in the city, but none compare to the Greektown location. I have been to Philadelphia and sampled their best cheesesteak sandwich, and this place is definitely comparable. Though not as good, it is pretty damn close. What’s funny about getting cheesesteak sandwiches around Chicago is no places specialize in them, so they always taste like shit. Usually you just get Italian beef on a roll with a couple slices of mozzarella cheese melted over it and maybe some peppers and onions. They’re always tough, dry, and tasteless.
Philly’s Best does it right, and they are the only place to specialize in these sandwiches in the area. First and foremost, ordering it on garlic bread is a must. The beef is made in-house, and sliced ultra thin so it practically shreds up when picked up. The beef also sits in its broth until the sandwich is ready to be prepared, so a lot of the gravy is soaked up by the bread, making it a very moist sandwich. It’s topped with grilled onion and a thin, homemade cheese sauce. This place is the real deal, and is a hotspot for late-night partygoers from UIC.
